The War of The World

An important new book by Niall Ferguson, who makes a convincing case that "economic volatility very often provides the trigger for the politicization of ethnic difference.  Proximity to a strategic borderland, usually an imperial border, determines the extent to which the violence will metastasize....Ethnic confluence, economic volatility and empires on the wane; such was and remains the fatal formula."  As one who is constantly amazed at man's inhumanity to man, this book was nothing short of a revelation for me.  It's an arduous read, but well worth it.
